Easyweb's project in the Kimberley
In April 2009, easyweb embarked on the first of a series of wireless hotspot installations in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Incorporating expansive landscapes, awe-inspiring gorges, waterfalls, caves, rainforests and a wide variety of wildlife, the Kimberley is one of the world's last great wilderness areas.
The same environment that makes the Kimberley one of Australia's great natural treasures also presents challenges in the provision of internet services. Wireless hotspot access is the obvious solution in an area where even the terrestrial phone network has limited reach.
easyweb engineers installed 18 wireless internet hotspots in locations from Aboriginal communities to cattle stations in some of the remotest parts of the Kimberley. The unique nature of the region meant access involved transportation via 4x4 vehicles and light aircraft. And the harsh environment meant only high grade equipment could be used, secured to the most robust structures available.
easyweb were partnered on the project with satellite and internet company, NewSat, which provided back haul satellite internet infrastructure connecting easyweb networks to the world. Headquartered in Melbourne, NewSat operates two of Australia’s largest satellite teleports at Bayswater, Perth and Mawson Lakes, Adelaide.
